Jesse Jones has been on his crusade for ‘Free Credit Freezes for All’ since last year. He wanted to make sure Washington consumers would not have to pay the ten dollar fee to freeze and unfreeze their credit. Now, his hard work finally paid off.
‘Free Credit Freeze for All’ passed both houses Thursday, with an 81 to 15 vote.
The main sponsor the Senate Bill 6018 is Senator Mark Mullet from Issaquah. The bill will permanently remove the 10 dollar to freeze and unfreeze your credit with the three major credit agencies.
Experts said it’s the best way to protect your credit from thieves. What was surprising to Mullet was the speed in which the bill moved.
“It rose to the surface from both chambers, Senate and the House Democrats and Republicans, as one of those bills we wanted to make sure got to the finish line,” Mullet explained.
I’ve been calling for ‘Free Freezes for All’ since the Equifax data breach was announced last September. The credit agency admits the crime exposed the personal and financial information for more than 145 million people.
“You actually have to pay the people that are causing you to want to freeze and unfreeze your data it’s a terrible thing that the law is protecting this terrible mistake,” Rep. Zack Hudgins said.
Representative Hudgins had written a free credit freeze bill too, but he got behind Mullet’s.
The bill is now headed to Governor Jay Inslee’s desk.
